OBD1 started in the early 80's.

Ask at seller (first owner) ;
- no O2 sensors on the exhaust line.
- no OBD on his wagon .

good news for me with the modifications I would make

If the O2 sensor were to be on the exhaust manifold it would be on the drivers side facing forwards above the y-pipe connection. You would see it through the wheel well.
One the passenger side you would flip the wheel well liner out of the way and find some sort of exhaust valve. It has a large weight on it and a spring. You can rotate the weight...it moves very easily.
Both of these items exist on my 1991 318.
