Default Trailer Hitch Question

Guys, I have 2002 1500 conversion. Looking to buy a new hitch from etrailer.com and need to know if I have a standard or step bumper? I don't want to order the wrong one. Pic of the van below.

You have a step bumper. The standard is pretty well flush with the back doors. The step bumper sticks farther out. The receiver tube may protrude a little more for your bumper. I trust you're going with a class III. You have a wide choice of hitches to go into the receiver. Depending on what you plan to tow, you might want to invest in an equalizing hitch. Also know as weight distributing.

Yes, class III and will tow a Fiat 500 Abarth for track days. I'm either going to buy a lightweight trailer or tow dolly. Car weighs in at 2400 lbs.

I used to autocross a Dodge Omni. I'd carry extra wheels and some tools and that was it. It would really eat at one Mustang driver who spent a lot of money on his engine and suspension and I would trade back and forth with faster times. Personally, I'd go with a lightweight aluminum flat bed trailer. If it's a dedicated track car, you won't have to put plates on it. At least not in most states. Plus, if you have a rear wheel bearing failure on the track, you can still get the car home. If your spouse has his or her heart set on that huge grand piano, you have something to haul it home. There's always lot's of uses for a handy trailer.

I would make sure you get a trailer with brakes.

I agree. The tow dolly I'm looking at has surge brakes.

Saw this wiring harness yesterday as I was investigating my hitch install and was wondering what it is? Is it trailer lighting?

Possibly. I've seen a lot of kits that plug into the factory harness. A lot depends on if you have the factory tow package. I put one on a '93 Dakota once and the kit separated a plug under the rear of the truck and the kit was inserted and the plug fit on both sides. Once I got the plug apart, it took longer to route the wires than install them.
