Default Only 4.5 Quarts?? ‘98 B1500 with 46RE Transmission

Changed the transmission fluid and filter last night in my ‘98 passenger van with 99k miles. Is was pleasantly sublime to work on such a simple task: no moving exhaust pipes or other interference to drop the pan. : )

But dropping the pan only resulted in about 4.5 quarts of ATF. A quick perusal of the owner’s guide doesn’t even list the quantity of fluid that’s in there.

Anyone else know? I filled it back up with 4.5 quarts of ATF+4 and the dip reads fine. But I bought 8 quarts thinking it probably used 16 and half wouldn’t be drainable bc of the fluid trapped in the TC.

Check fluid with engine running at operating temp, in neutral. Checking in park will give you an artificially high reading.

Usually, fluid/filter change will take 4 to 6 quarts of fluid. Just depends on how long you let it sit and drain.

The rest is in the torque converter.

Did my trans ,46RE about 12000m ago. Dropped pan,did filter and bands, put it all back together. put in 4 quarts, disconected trans cooler line(going to cooler, put line in a old w/w jug, started van ,pumped another 3quarts out, stopped van,put in 3 quarts, did it anther 2 times untill it started pumping out clean fluid. this way it goes thru torque converter. About 14 quarts in total, but pretty sure I got it all.Just bought a dorman pan with a drain plug, changing fluid again this weekend.Just doing what is inside the pan now. also puting in 10 oz of lubegard platinum. should be good for another 12000m. (recomended intervole). Mine is also 1998,46re,B3500 camper van. The trans fill from empty is about 11quarts. Hope this helps.
