1997 Ram Van on LPG
Howdy Y'all,
I'm looking to convert my LPG fuel system back to petrol. I've seen the same question asked in a few places but the answers are few and far between. Answers vary from what needs to be done.
When i first bought the van i was quite leery on doing the conversion myself. I've worked on small engines for half my life, worked at a truck and trailer shop for a few years and always worked on my families, friends and my own vehicles in the past (way past tho lol). I've always had a rule when it comes to do it myself or letting a shop do the work. If I've never done it or been shown I won't do it. I will not "practice" on mine nor anyone else's vehicle. Recently I had to throw that aside and rebuild the fueling system myself as it just wasn't in my budget to have a shop fix it let alone find any that even would. So, I'm no longer leery about doing the conversion. Quite of bit of tucked away information came out and I found it was just (almost) like riding a bike. After troubleshooting and replacing most of the ignition and fueling systems I feel comfortable enough to start on the conversion back to gasoline. So after a lot of research I would like to ask you guys opinion before I start.
Some info first.
1997 B2500 Dodge Ram converted from petrol to LPG with an OD reading of 97kms.
Current OD reading 142.448 kms on a 5.2l V8.
Quote for conversion 12-1500 dollars.
Whats left of original gas fueling system? All of it but the tank. Injectors, fuel rails. gas lines etc are all original and intact (basically brand new with 97 kms on them)
Now since a lot of the conversions were made/added to produce a dual fueling system with only a switch to change from one to the other. I think a lot of the info I've read is wrong/misleading. Some are suggesting I need to change injectors, rails, carb and reset timing. Some go as far as changing pistons, seals and having my computer reset/flashed. I already know the computer reset is unnecessary. I'm starting to think most of it is. I'm leaning towards throwing on a gas tank, hooking the lines back up and it's done. Any thoughts? Kind regards Vern

No experience in the conversion but thats what I would do. Im not sure of your location but a van thats pretty complete in a UPullit would be handy to have near by. Who did the original conversion?
Is the stock throttle body on it? How is the LP getting into the engine? I'm guessing someone put in something under the throttle body or modded the original. If everything is intact should be a fairly easy conversion. If it hasn't been running on gasoline for a while if there is any old gas in the tank/lines etc that will have to cleared out and fresh gas put in.
I work at a shop that was contracted with Schwanns for a few years. My experience on with these new LPG systems is the engines were essentially the same as gasoline (mostly ford 5.4s and gm 6.0s) the rails injectors ect were just bolt in. So I would think one could junkyard swaps the fuel system pretty cheaply depending on how much you wanted to invest
Whats currently wrong with the LPG system, Ive pondered an LPG conversion on mine, just to be different lol, might be able to do some parts trading

Nothing wrong with the LPG system. There are only three places in the city I can get propane. None after 8pm. It gets to minus 40 here. Propane and (extreme) cold = frustration
Van sat for over 5 years. Propane sticker is out of date. I've been turned away on E and that sucks *****. I have gas lawnmowers and generators. Always a spare jerry can handy if I run out of gas. Back on road in five mins. Only thing that runs on propane besides the van is the bbq and hauling around a 20lb propane tank and that "clank against every thing" mammoth hose adapter gets a tad bit more irritating every day lmao. Back on road in 2 hours ...if lucky. I may be just getting old and cranky but standing on the side of the road when it's minus 30 holding a 20 lb propane upside down on one of the deadliest highways in Canada while the propane drips into the tank at a Sloths pace is not as fun as it used to be. (Actually ended up just making my own propane hose and if I run out I just remove the fuel line and attach the BBQ tank directly...Now back on road in under 20.... brilliant I know right?) And I'll tell you what m8. I'll send you the vaporizer, regulator, solenoid etc... for the price of shipping and a gas tank. So if you can somehow get me one to redneck....i mean "oil country" Alberta I'll send you the works. Even tradsies OR I'll go get a second hand tank and sell it all to you for that price plus you pay the shipping. I paid 125 just for the rebuild kit. I believe the Model E goes for around 300 Canadian with lock off and solenoid and the 300 goes for a bit more. That is new of course. 50 bucks for the tank max and what ever shipping would be .... 20 -30 more I would think depending on locale. So good deal for you either way. No? lol.
Edit: Oh and that is CND so 50 bucks is like what 30 cents or so USD? Bahahahha lol

Ok, this may have already been answered, but is it propane or factory CNG? That’s compressed natural gas, CNG vans had 3 white tanks under it, two where the factory tank would be and one along the side
factory CNG engine internals were the same as gas engines But fuel delivery was all different
I actualy went to a class on CNG vans for Chrysler , only saw 2 at the dealers I worked at

Well that would be a ding ding on the guess. Lol. They fuel pump relay was tucked up above the back axle. Funny I thought maybe I uncovered a hidden drug stash lolol. Was wrapped in plastic
