Hi all - First real post. I need rear end help! Haha. My ring and pinion gears grenaded and damaged the diff, I need a new full rear assembly and need to know which years are compatible. I have a ‘94 B250 w/ 9.25” 3.55 gears, 12 bolt, ABS, drum brakes, 3sp trans w/ OD. I know pickup rear ends will not fit. From what I have seen it sounds like ‘94-98 should be a straight swap? Can anyone confirm this or any other year? Will a 2003 9.25” axle with disc brakes bolt up with no mods including parking brake? Appreciate any help. Thanks!
My understanding is that for 9.25 12 bolt the year range is 1982-1994. I get this from cross referencing master rebuild kits for the rear differential.
I'm not a mechanic so that could be wrong - I merely referenced the rebuild kit for your specific piece and saw that year range as compatible with the kit.

Thanks for your input. I think this compatibility is larger based on that being the years of the B250 model. I’m having a hard enough time finding a 12 bolt 9.25” that doesn’t have 200k miles on it period. But most of the ones I see available from recyclers are newer than ‘94. From what I can tell they seem to suggest that ‘92-97 is a direct replacement for my ‘94. I am trying to figure out if anyone can actually confirm this or if it’s all guesswork. And/or it was only a slight change for ‘98+ years and it could EASILY be adapted to work. I’m not a mechanic either, but I do as much of my own work as I can and this is beyond my skills - so I’m trying to keep it cheap. Ha
you will find differential rebuild kits. Find your spec 9.25 12 bolt, then click the part number and it tells you the year of 250 van that it works with. The year range is 1982-1994 meaning, I can rebuild any differential on the 250 with that kit at those specs, and certainly not a 1997 which isn't even a b250 but a 2500 and they are not the same.

I follow what you are saying. Perhaps I should been more clear, I know I will need an internal rebuild kit or new gears. However, the differential housing itself is damaged, it won’t seat/seal properly and cannot be easily rebuilt, if at all. It would be cheaper to just buy an entirely new (used) rear axle assembly. So I am trying to see if a ‘97 rear axle assembly will bolt up to my ‘94. It has exactly the same specs, I just need to know if the perches and mounting will line up. Hope that makes more sense.
Ahh, I get it now... sorry. Reasons like this are why I always lead with claiming not to be a mechanic.
Having said that, I did more reading where I could and I know this - it seems that the gasket for the 9.25 12 bolt is exactly the same on the 97 and yours. If the gasket is identical, I'm wagering that you're right in that the 97 would be a straight swap. Someone else will eventually chime in and solve the mystery.
You're just going to have to measure yours up and go to the junk yard and compare dimensions. You could always grind off the perches off your old one and have them welded where they need to be.
Some salvage yards have the Hollander Interchange Manual
It will list all Direct Replacements for your differential
LKQ yards will print it out for you- but you have to go there in person (no calls - no phones)
But MAYBE - you could call their 1-800 corporate number and MAYBE they could supply the interchange info ... idunno
Sometimes all it takes to make a useable differential not show up in the Hollander is a different size U-Joint at the pinion yoke.
Disc Brake upgrades probably wouldn't be listed , but if a 2003 with drums is listed - then a 2003 disc rear would "BOLT IN" ... but then you would have to decide for yourself what other components you need to grab for the complete installation.
(example - lines, hoses, cables, master cylinder, booster etc
