Is the 1997 Dodge ram van 3500 frame a 1 ton frame? If not what is it? I've been told that 3500 trucks and vans have a 1 ton frame, however I'm not sure how accurate that is.

I believe so. Some 2500 trucks have a 1 ton frame if they are the 8800 pound chassis. I had a Ram 2500 with the 8800 pound chassis and it was a heavier duty truck than a co-workers 2500 Cummins. Heavier springs and brakes.

Aren't vans unibody?? I.E. Subframes, but, not a full-length frame like the trucks have.

Yes. That's what the "3500" designates. Should be eight lug wheels as well. (should be.....)

Should be a sticker on the drivers side door frame, that will tell you gross vehicle weight rating. Subtract the weight of the van itself from that, and that will tell you your cargo capacity.

Something else to consider.... the 15 passenger vans were 3500s, and 15 people is in the neighborhood of 3000 lbs.
