found the metal shavings After the rebuild. matter of fact i did the band ajustments today. dropped the pan and did other band inside. cleaned metal shavings out . there werent alot but it did coat the magnet pretty good. i wonder if this was just old debris trapped in tight corners., that got flushed out After the rebuild...

If you are still getting metal shavings on the magnet, the trans ain't gonna last long....

There are bearings all the way thru the trans, any one of them could be howling. (initially, I though you were playing 'dramatic' music in the video....... ) I don't think it's pump whine, as that wouldn't go away under no load conditions, after all, the pump would still be pumping..... Likely what you are hearing is what is causing those metal shavings though. A lathe can make those type of harmonics as well, and that's really what it sounds like......

okay so under no load ( traveling in neutral ) are you saying there is no pressure on those bearings? if you notice in the video starting out at slow speeds you really dont hear a whining noise. its more noticeable at 35mph when i take my foot off the gas and just let it roll. would that help indicate which bearing it may be?

Are there any bearings in the Torque converter that may have gone bad?

another question- ive been considering swapping transmissions from junkyard at this point. do you know what years would be compatible. i see a 2001 dodge b3500 in good shape with 80k miles. cant find anything online about compatible years.

I suspect there are bearings in the torque converter, but, if those are bad, replace the tc... no user serviceable parts.

Unfortunately, I think you are limited to 96-97 model year transmissions. Yours will have the VSS on the tailhousing of the trans, and those went away in 98. 95 and older are RH transmissions, and your computer won't have a clue what to do with one of those..... Be warned, even some 96 model year trucks apparently came with the RH trans..... Make sure the year is correct, and the electrical connector is 8 pin. 46RE out of just about any rear wheel drive vehicle, of the proper year range, will work though. Doesn't have to come out of a van.

thought i might add this to the thread too. i did not use atf+4 after rebuild. the guy at auto store said normal ATF should work fine. could this be causing the wine? maybe the viscosity is too thin and not lubricating bearing properly? another important note is that when i press the overdrive button ON ( light on ) the howl is dampened...and with continued acceleration theres a sweet spot where the noise completely disapears in OD. THEN when i let off the gas the noise will return. so with OD light off the whine is louder. could this be a fluid issue ? lack of lubrication? fluid too thin? im stuck because of how quite and smooth it runs with OD light on. like increasing speed steadily in OD will completely eliminate the noise as if its pushing more fluid& stronger through the trans. coating all the bearings well. eliminating noise.

hope im making sense with this. its kinda hard to explain.

Our one-time resident trans guru, MonteC, (runs on trans shop somewhere....) flatly stated to ONLY use ATF +4 in these transmissions. No additives, no universal fluid, nothin' else.

thats what i was thinking as well. is it likely to be able to get all the metals shavings and debree out of every nook and cranny? or is it expected that the filter catches the trapped debris ? im going to clean it out best i can but thinking back on it i used a power washer to clean out the biggest bearing , the one with 14 ***** with cage around it. well anyway i got to thinking that probably rusted and started breaking over time. do you think its best to just replace every bearing thru out?
