Hi folks. new user here with a really weird van. It's an '89 B150 Short Wheel base, no windows, 3.9L V6 with a 3 speed manual floor shift. I've not been able to identify what 3 speed it is, but its horrible for daily driving. 1st and 2nd gear has so much torque you could scale a wall, and then 3rd gear drops all life out of the engine. In short, its terrible and I want to upgrade it to a 5 speed trans, but have no idea where to start or what is compatible. Would love some input about my options. Thanks!

Bell housing bolt pattern didn't change for years. Shifter location, and trans mounts did though. Expect to have to do some fab work to put a five speed in there. I think I would at least go with something like the NV3500.... or NV4500 if you can find one...... Have to shorten the driveshaft as well, as the trans is going to be longer than the three speed.
