Default Adapting a 3 wire 46re 5.9L in place of a 5 wire 46RE 5.9L

I have a 1996 Dodge b2500 5.9 l van with 46re and a five wire plug. I bought an older 46re it has a three wire plug in. How can I make this work?

RE will have an 8 wire plug. RH will have the three wire. You can't make it work. The PCM won't know what to do with O/D or TCC, as it won't be getting any data from the governor pressure sensor the RH doesn't have. You need an RE trans.

You can make it work but makes more scene to get the correct transmission. keep in mind there were some changes to the 46re's so don't get one after 2000 the electronics changed.

From the research I did the tranny that I got is from a 1993 Dakota and it is a 6(3) wire 46RE.
It said that to wire to this one that I would loos my Safety neutral switch(ok) and lose my dah gear display(ok) and might loose my over drive.
And I would love to find the same transmission but I couldn't find one. I thought I had. Ut it's hard because of the 2wd 5.9l all the ones I fine have been four-wheel drive with 5.9 l. And I couldn't afford $3,000 to have it rebuilt

Probably not a 46, unless it was behind a V-8, even then, might be a 44, and certainly not an RE, those didn't exist until 96. If the plug going down into the top of the valve body is 3 wires, that's an RH. No two ways about it.

What year truck are you trying to put this in? Ok, 96 Van.

You should still have the mechanical PRNDL....

Are we all sure the 46RE didn't come with both?
I've had issues finding neutral safety switch for the 46Re because of this and they did make an adapter but believe it was to go from 5pin to 3?
I also was looking into getting a rebuilt 46Re a few days ago and it asked which switch i want.

Yeah, the PRNDL in the cab changed at some point, so the switch had to change as well, so I could tell the dash what to display.
