Default Gas slow to fill tank

I got my van recently and I've been working on it and fixing it up, still have a lot of work to do.

One problem on my list is that when I go to fill the gas tank the fuel pump handle will shut off unless I hold the pump handle such that the fuel comes out slowly. If I pump the gas at a normal rate, the tank can't accept the fuel flow and it backs up the vent hose and shuts off the pump.

I checked the vent hose today and it is not obstructed.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Might wanna pull the whole fill tube assembly off, and inspect it..... Generally though, what you are experiencing is a venting issue.....

Thanks. I guess I'll have to drop the tank and and check everything out properly.

Sometimes if you pull the nozzle out just a bit, or twist it to the left or right, you can then get it to fill at full speed.

Thanks, but that's not the problem here, I moved it around in every possible position.

You have evaporative controls in the fuel tank. That's where your issue usually is. It's what allows the displaced air to vent while filling. It can be beside the tank but usually on top of it.
