Default 5.9 V8 Distributor must be retarded clockwise to fire/run?

Hey all,
Has Anyone got any ideas why it's doing this?
The Distributor must be retarded clockwise to fire/run?So I just bought a 2002 non runner B3500 van with a 5.9 v8.

I was gonna use the front clip for my deer wrecked van '98.

But if I can get the '02 van running I'd be better off. It's rusty but clean inside and only 97k.

PO said he drove it to the Dr.'s office and wouldn't start when he left.

Got good plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

It's getting spark on all cylinders but the distributor MUST be retarded about 1/4" clockwise at the base.

Away from the permanent mark on the block.

That's the ONLY spot where it fires.

The engine will ONLY fire and skip along with the starter and ALMOST stay running but stalls without starter.

Then crank for a bit and then sputters and skips along again then doesn't run again.

A little starting fluid added doesn't make much difference.

There was a new in the box PCM included.
I swapped it out,
Same scenario with the new PCM installed.

Also no codes showing on either PCM using OBD2 scanner

Swapped out the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor with good ones from my 98.

No difference.

Maybe a skipped timing chain? Seems unlikely.

Any ideas let me know please.

I gotta get some wheels pretty quick.

Thanks a lot,

Muchas Gracias,

Kevin

Actually, a skipped timing chain isn't as unlikely as you may think...... Wouldn't hurt to check it...... Run #1 to TDC, in firing position, see where the rotor is pointing. Should be very close to the notch in the distributor body.
