Buying a 2005 Cummins Need Advice / Help
Hi,
This is my firs time posting on here, so please be easy. I am in the market for a new truck. After months of searching and waiting I have come to the conclusion that I want to buy a 2005 4dr Cummins. I do have a few questions tho so I figured this would be the best place to ask my questions since the dealer will be a "yes man" to anything I ask just so they can sell me the car.
The truck will be used for pulling my 32ft race car trailer. Currently I have a silverado with a 454 and gas is killing me and the truck is getting old so might as well upgrade to the best.
The Cummins I have been looking at is a 05 Cummins 4dr with 4.10 gears. Now my question is this.. would you go with a 4 speed auto or a 6 speed manual? If either of them please tell me why so I can make up my mind. Only reason why I would tend to stay away from a 6 speed manual would be due to the fact that living in S. Cali traffic can be a killer sometimes. I am also going to get just the 2 wheel drive and not the 4 wheel drive just because I see no need to have a 4 wheel drive tow rig.
Now granted the main reason for this truck is for towing but it will also be used for daily driving as well....
Anyone know how the 05 cummins do on milage? City / Highway Towing or not Towing? Hard question but some might have info on that....
Oh yeah, if you feel as tho I might be overlooking something please let me know.....
Thanks in Advance for all the help........

my 04 ram gets just under 18 mpg. and thats with the 4.10 gears. now the only downside is that to hit highway speeds I have to turn around 2300rpm. if I had taller gears, or an overdrive gear installed it would lower the engine RPM, save fuel and wear and tear on the engine since it doesnt have to spin as many times to go the same distance. The power band on this engine is extreemly flat, it makes max torq around 1600rpm which is crazy low when you look at diesels from GM(Isuzu) or ford(Inernational)
I went with the 4x4 myself, just cause you never know, plus it's fun to go offroading on occasion, and my little mini taco doesnt fair too well on some trails
I dont know how the traffic is in So Cal. but the traffin in Atlanta can be insane sometimes. first gear is nice when traffic is moving too slow for second. however I have heard the auto for this engine has been worked on quite a bit and is better then the old one, however, myself, I never met an automatic I trused too much
