Cold Air Intake Dilemma!!!
Hey guys, I recently purchased a 07 Dodge Ram Big Horn (4.7L), I was just wondering wat is the best Cold air intake to go with? Since i have the Flowmaster 50 Series on it already, is the sound going to change after adding the CAI? What are the prices running at for the CAI?
Because the 3rd Gen Ram air intake system was significantly upsized to match the 5.7 V8s higher airflow, and because the lower airflow required 4.7 V8 shares that larger airbox, there is very little gain to be had from a CAI.
The magazine dyno tests that are so common
use a "trick" to show horsepower gains
- they start with a factory paper air filter that is heavily clogged with dirt from many miles of use and then compare it to a fresh new foam filter.
The main thing with a CAI purchase is to buy from a retailer that will let you return it 'no questions asked'. Test it for yourself with the stopwatch built into your cell phone.
Better yet, do before and after tests of the IAT and MAP sensors.
If a CAI improves anything the IAT will go down and the MAP sensor reading will go up. You can borrow a scanner to read these by leaving a deposit at many auto parts stores now days.
If you must buy a CAI
the one with the least restrictive filter is the Air Hammer:

No CAI improves MPG in daily driving because most of the time the throttle butterfly blades are partially closed, which kills off any benefit of a lower restriction air filter.
It is possible that a really loud intake
(or exhaust or high ratio differential)
will cause you to slow down a little if you drive by ear,
which can make MPG go up.
