Hey guys-new here-i have a 97 dodge ram, and it wont run unless you hold the gas to the floor-then, all it does is pop, run for maybe 3 seconds, then die-the fuel pump is under 1 year old, and it has around 55 psi of fuel pressure-i did a tuneup, and it didnt help much-anyone have any ideas-let me know-im getting desperate here-what is the fuel pressure its supposed to have-thanks, mike</P>

Hmmmm, vacuum leak, catalytic convertor, bad intake gaskets... that what pops into my head... what does everyone else think?

I would check the coil ground. Sometimes the coil won't ground properly to the bracket, won't let it start properly. Simple but mind boggeling easy fix.

 

just has the same problem this week, they first told me my catalytic converter was bad so i fixed that but nothing changed. They then told me that my o2 sensor was bad and my crank positioning sensor was bad, I changed 02 sensors, nothing new, then installed a new crank sensor and wa-la, problem solved. The sensor was malufinctioning and telling the enigne to fire when it shouldnt, resulting in hard starting, hesitation while running, and popping noises. Its about 200-400 bucks to fix depending on whether you do it yourself. Hope this helps</P>

 

I wonder how long it ran like that? Probably not good for the engine to be popping at the wrong time like that.</P>

 

Check your timing! You may have jumped a tooth on your timing chain.

 

Yah this really does sound like a timing issue.

 

How much was the Crank Sensor?

 

i had a similar issue with my mustang, gave it a tune up and all sorts of good stuff never fixed the problem... after all that it turned out to be the throttle body sticking.. took it off and cleaned real good...

problem solved
