Less than 9 MPG!
I just curious, so I pulled my log book (since Mar 04 when I bought) and entered the data into a speadsheet:
Miles MPG Gals Cost $/gal
6929 10.96 632.22 1112.51 1.760
The above results are probably 85% city and 15% highway driving.
The best MPG was 13.65 and the lowest was 8.75
The most I have paid per gallon is $1.99 and the least was $1.54.

I started a thread in the 2nd gen. about the same thing - mileage. I purchased in Nov. 04 a 02 2500 4WD ext. cab shortbed with the 5.9 and 3.55 rear. I get 11 to 11.5 mpg. That is with mostly city. I am glad mine does a little bit better than that. But, I feel your pain. I went from a 94 Suburban with 185000 mi and got 13 city and 16 hwy. I would have never thought this truck could be worse. I only have 40000mi on the truck. Alot of the posters said to try new plugs, cap and rotor. I had all of the factory stuff still in it so we will see if it helps.
I sure would think that you 5.9ers would get better gas milage than that. I get araound 8.75 to 9.25 per gal with my Supercharged Hemi with 4.56 gears and a 4x4 on top of that. Besides all that I stay in it.
