Default 2002 1500 which engine to get?

I am looking to buy a 2002 1500 4door 4x4. I will be towing a pretty large boat occasionaly, but other then that it will be used for normal city/highway travel.

I am wondering which engine I should get for the best gas milage. I haven't hard anything good about gas milage on any engine. I have heard people say they are getting single digit gas milage with the 4.7L, but surely the 5.9L is even worse?

If any of you have first hand knowledge I'd like to hear it. Also if you are selling a truck as described above I'd be interested in getting some pics and talking price.

Thanks.

The bigger the boat the bigger the engine... go w/360 I say. I'd also consider the 3/4 ton instead (depending on how big the boat is). I've got a '00 4x4 QC SB 360 & get roughly 12mpg avg.

Read all of the4.7/5.9 gas milage posts before you decide...

I have the 5.9L and pull a horse trailer. I have great power and get about 12 mpg.

I have a 2002 4.7L 4X4. with a k&n filter gets avg of 13.4. What stinks is the Hemi is rated at 13. Hindsite is 20/20. Well for a used 8000miler for 19K. I guess i ddint do too bad.

Well I went witht he 4.7L. I'm getting about 14mpg doing mixed city and highway driving. I get about 17-18 on the highway so I'm pretty happy with that. I haven't gotten my boat yet so I haven;t tested the ahuling power, but from what I have seen so far I am sure it will do fine.

I've got a K&N filter on order. Anxious to see if it makes any difference on the gas milage.

BTW, Ramit I also paid 19k for my 2002, but it was a QC 2x4 with 23k miles on it. I wanted a QC 4x4, but couldn;t find any in the right price range with the same options like auto trans and power windows etc...

Thanks for the input.

Check out Dodge's tow rating guides, but I'd have to add another vote for the 5.9L engine. Under "normal" unloaded driving, the two engines probably won't have a significantly different thirst for fuel (+/- 10%), but once you load it up to GCWR, the higher torque of the 5.9L engine will be appreciated.
