03 Hemi 1500 mileage and Performance problem
What would you do?
2003 1500 SLT 4x4 quad cab.
I have about 5000 miles on this vehicle so far and I am a bit frustrated. I tried to baby the truck in town to get better mileage, no dice, so I have been driving it more normal and it is about the same, 8.9-9.3. Empty town and country gets 10.5-11. I towed a 3 place open deck sled trailer and 3 sleds to Western Wyoming over the weekend: mostly freeway. On the way over I fought wind and wound up with 6.9 mpg. On the way home I was able to get 9. The truck will not pull this little trailer in OD so I tried 70 in direct for a bunch of miles and was getting 8.9, sped up to 75 and was getting 9.1. The only time I am impressed by this truck is at WOT.
So, again, what would you do and what do you think the problem is? The dealer told me to bring it in and they would do a 100 road test. Hmm the thought of some monkey running parts around in my truck is nerve racking!!!!!

That's awful mileage. I would let the dealer look at it for sure. Even if I drive mine hard, the mileage isn't that bad.
What do you mean by a 100 road test? 100 mile road test? What does your tailpipe look like? Is it gray, or black looking? Black would indicate a rich condition. Cold be consuming more gas due to the cold temps.
Let us know what happens.

100 Mile road test.
I have not experienced cold temps, especially 20-40 degree temps, having a significant impact on mileage. The truck is parked in a garage and does not require warm up time, therefore idle time is at a bare minimum. I don't like to let vehicles sit at idle for long periods anyway. That is probably residual from the old days of high profile and duration cam experience.
