Default Tire question

The tires on my RAM are 265/70/17

Tire newb right here. What are the details of the sizes listed above?

265 = Height??? (Inches????) About 25 Inches tall
70 = Width????? (Inches????) About 12 Inches wide
17 = Rim Size???? (Inches????) 17 Inches

I want bigger tires. I want 33 or 35 inch tires. What are the sizes on 33/35 inch tires? What are my options? I want to keep my existing rims so, I need to find tires that will fit a 17 rim......... Sound about right? Hope im not too confusing.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

This may be easier if you just tell us what vehicle you are putting these tires on and then we can tell you from experience what will and will not fit.

To answer your question, I have 305's and they are equal to 33 inches tall.

My 97 1500 4x4 has 285/75/16's on it. Just shy of 33" tall. That's about as big as I can go without rubbing on the frame rails. They rub just a bit with a hard cut.

What model year and drive train do you have?

2001 RAM1500 4x4

I bought it a few months ago. It already came with a lift but I don't know how high. Anyway I can check? When I bought it, the first thing my wife said was, "Those tires look small...."

That's no good. I guess it is hard to give you a straight answer though without knowing how high the lift is. If it is something like a 3 inch lift I'm sure you could fix 305's, maybe even 35's but I couldn't say for sure.

If it's a 3" lift which is what I have you can fit 305's or 33"s I think 35"s would fit in the back and look a little better but not in the front. The 33"s on Eagle Alloy wheels which stick a bit out the side don't rub at all but at full turn while they don't rub they are a little close. I don't think 35's would fit without cutting the metal at the bottom of the wheel well. Now 35"s may very well fit on stock wheels but with the Eagle Alloys that stick out it looks like it would hit the metal corner on the wheel well.

265 is mm width of the tire
70 is 70% of 265 - side wall height
17 is the wheel size that fit this particular tire

so you take 265mmX70% = 185.5mm = 7.3inch (1 side wall height)

so you take 7.3 x 2 (sidewall on each side of wheel) = 14.6 inch + 17inch the wheel size = total 31.6 inch tall.

repsol is exactly right. Its nice to get an actual answer to a question every now and then. Thanks for konwing what you're talking about repsol. Of course all that math may not really help you determine what size shoes you should buy. Check out some other posts here for guidance. By the way, I have 33x12.50x17 pro comp all terrains on my '05 with no lift. They are super quiet and they are awesome in the dirt.
