Default 5.7L = What Size

Is the 5.7L hemi considered a 340 cid? If so, is it the same 340 from back in the 70s?

It's a 345 and shares absolutely nothing in common with the Muscle Car Era 340. The Hemi is the smallest an engine can be and still be considered a 5.7L, a 340 is a 5.6L

The 340 was part of the LA engine line. Here is a link about this engine line and a second specifically about the 340 itself. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/318.html and http://www.allpar.com/mopar/mopar340.html Although the 340 was a screamer, it was NO HEMI. The 5.7L (345) HEMI is a completely new block. Here is a link about the 5.7L and its big brother 6.1 (370 cu. in.). http://www.allpar.com/mopar/new-mopar-hemi.html

If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask.

It's a 345, wherever you read that it was a was a typo, Dodge made it a top priority for the Hemi to have 1 hp per cubic inch.

ya the Hemi was hugely over marketed, dont get me wrong, engine still is awsome, but it was sold to the everyday consumer as a rebirth of the old muscle, which unfortunately it was not, not too mention, wasnt that 345 horse to the crank or was it at the wheels? im highly doubtful at the wheels but some manufacturers rate it at the wheels.

It's time for people to face the fact that the characteristics of the 426 HEMI does NOT define whether or not an engine is a HEMI or not. Read this. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/hemi/chrysler-hemi.html In a recent Motor Trend article where they compared the Magnum SRT-8 against the Mercedes E550 AMG, they found that the 6.1L HEMI produced the almost the same amount of hp that the 426 HEMI did. The 6.1 is only 370 cu. in. with a 10.3 to 1 compression ratio (the same block as the 5.7L) that is superior. Remember when the 426 HEMI produced around 433 hp to the wheels, it had a 10.25 to 1 compression ratio, much lower restriction exhaust, and other things giving it an advantage over the newer 5.7L (the 5.7 has only a 9.6 to 1 compression ratio). The 5.7 was made to be more practical for daily use, and it is significantly less expensive for Chrysler to build than the "Elephant Block" 426 HEMI. Remember this next time you feel like complaining about the 5.7L HEMI being less than a HEMI by your defintion.

Furthermore, I believe the hp rating for the 426 was in gross horsepower verses net horsepower which the current HEMI is rated in. The change to net was intended to help the owners get a more accurate rating.
