Tire Size Question
I am looking replace my stock 265/70 17 tires with something larger on my 04 4x4 1500 quad cab. I have 3.55 gears and did not think that the tire size would be an issue with my rear gearing. It looks like 285's are only 1 inch taller than 265's.......anyone gone larger than 285's with the 3.55 gears?
I am joining this forum on behalf of my father. I am a Nissan person myself. No offense to all of you. He has questions once in a while and no internet, so, I figured I could give him a helping hand.
Onto the reason why I am here today. He is in need of new tires and is going to get BFG A/T's or Wrangler MT/R's. He was wondering what size he can fit, to fill the wheel wells better than the stock Wrangler's. He doesn't want to do any modifications whatsoever and wants them to work without question. He also doesn't want anything that will cause undue wear on components. He wants to put tires on the wheels and go.
Truck specs: 1999, Red, Dodge Ram 1500, w/stock 16" alloy wheels.
Thanks for you help.

Changing the tires size affect the "overall ratio". The will make the truck speed different than indicated on the speedo. This affects the computer calculations for the ABS and trany shift points. You can have the dealer flash the computer with the new tire size to correct this. I have heard on the forum that they can only do up to 33" tires. Here is the formula and results for the common size tires. There are soon to be new programmers that im sure will be able to do other size tires.
((((Width*(Aspect Ratio/100)/25.4)*2)+Rim Size)) ((((245*(70/100)/25.4)*2)+17))=30.5
245/70R17 30.50"
265/70R17 31.61"
275/60R20 32.99"
315/70R17 34.36"
285/70R17 32.71"
Here is the formula for determining new gears to maintain the same performance.
(New Tire Height/Old Tire Height)*Current Gears=New gears
