Decided to stop paying the dealership so much for simple oil changes and start changing the oil myself... But I couldn't find in the manual how many quarts are needed... My friend works at Dodge said he's pretty sure it's 7, but he's not 100% sure...

Also, what do most of you guys go with, Synthetic or Regular?

 

What year? What motor? Ill assume a 2004 Hemi, and ya, its 7 quarts. If its a '04, wont this void your warranty?

 

yeah 7 qts on the '04. and Synthetic is what I use.

 

As long as the oil meets the SAE standards it will not affect your warranty. I run Mobil 1 10W30 -7 quarts.

 

Keep the recipt for the oil & filter with your truck records
It's as good as proof you changed the oil if you have a engine problem in the future!!

Well heres my plan, I run Mobil 1 also. I am changing the oil every 3K until I get 15K on her. After that I will go 5K on her. I really think Mobil Oil is good much longer than 5K even when towing and city driving, but its the filter that I worry about. Just my .02

 

A safe bet for quality group 4, full synthetic oils in an American V8 is 10 to 12,000 miles. Good quality filters should be used (Amsoil SDF or Mobil 1 filters) and they can safely last up to 12,000 miles. If you want to be extra safe, do a filter change at 5000 and the oil at 10,000. I realize this goes against todays 3 month 3000 mile hype, but it is entirely safe. If your still under warranty, use synthetic oil and change it at the Schedule B rate, not schedule "A".

I use personally use Amsoil 5w-30 heavy duty diesel and fleet oil in my Dakota and Amsoil's 15w-40 diesel oil in my Ram.

 

I'm going with every 6000 miles as per the owners manual. I wouldn't change so often, but I must make the warranty gods happy. Some European manufacuters are going to 12,000+ intervals. I even read that for a long term test that a BMW didn't require it's first oil change until 17,000 miles. I think the U.S. manufacturer's recommendations are just to keep the dealers happy.

 

Thanks guys... I just put in 7 qts of Mobil 1 10w30 yesterday.. I couldnt find any Mobil 1 filters tho, so I got the best one they had at the store, a PureOne oil filter... That filter should last me 6k, right?
