Hello, I'm about to get a 2500 Cummins Ram with a 4 speed and have an automatic tranny question. Question is, are the automatic tranny's the same in the 1500 gas, 2500 gas and 2500 diesel. I'm asking because I've heard the 1500 gas tranny "hunts" alot while towing and would rather not have that same tranny in my diesel.
Thanks fellas!
See you out there!

It depends, the 1500, you have a choice of a 5sp or 4sp auto. In the 2500 diesel, you only have the choice of the 4sp. Now as far as the 4sp in the 1500 and 2500 being the same, I dont know.

from what i can tell the transmission are the same, but how strong their built is the difference between a diesel and gas. this web page should show you what the difference is.

THIS IS TYPICAL APPLICATION---5.2 gets 42RE, 5.9 gets 46RE, 8.0 gets 47RE, 5.9 diesel gets 47RE, 4.7 gets 45RFE, and HEMI gets 45RFE. Some are gonna claim the 45 is a 5 speed, yes and no, also the 8.0 and 5.9 diesel are the only engines that get the 47RE and they are much stronger, also have added clutches to the packs. The hunting can be avoided if you know how to tow properly and keep speed below 65 MPH and OD turned OFF as it is not advisable to tow in OD.
