hi all, i have a 95 ram and every fifteen seconds the ac seems to kick on, runs for 5 secs, then shuts off. it'll keep doing that no matter the setting. sometimes it wont do it at all, but mostly it does. more of an annoyance then anything. any ideas? unplug something or turn the radio up louder

Does it have cold air coming out when the AC is on? Usualy it means the refrigerant is low. If it is low, then you have a leak somwhere.

No problem. Get yourself a spray bottle and add soapy water. Dish soap etc shake it up and make it soapy. Then spray it everywhere there is a refrigerant connection and on the hoses etc. It will bubble where there is a leak. I had a lot of holes in the rubber portion of one of my refrigerant lines on a Tempo I own. This soapy water thing works real good. If you can get to the area the leak is you will find it.

Hi youwho, first I´m not a "real mechanic" at a "Stealership", ánd usually I´m a optimistic person but in your case i guess its the ac-compressor which is blown. There are three reasons for having no cold air:Fuse AC defectiv, not enough cooling liquid (its a closed circle, but its fogging - not only by having holes in the hoses) and the ac-compressor makes a security-shutoff at a minimum of the liquid-stand,because the copmpressor uses the liquid for lubingor the worst case the ac-compressor itself. LOL, guess thats why you couldn't help me with my problem in my posts. If the compressor is cycling it's not bad. There is a low pressure switch that will shut the compressor off at a set psi. When the refrigerant is at the proper running psi the compressor does not cycle like he describes. It will cycle when the temperature inside the car reaches a certain temperature but not as quickly as he has described. The refrigerant is low, find the leaks.

Did you ever thought about the posibility of a bearing problem inside the compressor? It runs a few minutes till its getting warm and than it stands still till its cool down again? And one point more: I wrote that it could be the low refrigerant, but it mustn´t be only a leak in some hoses only, it could cause a never done maintenance,too..

Helping people here or in any other forum is like having a match in a dark coal mine.If you don´t see it you have less chances to find the problem directly. If we´re not able to help you at your first post there´s no needto get stinky. It´s the common problem of handling a problem over 5000 miles away and if you´re the opinion that you can make it better found a forum on your own.

Hi, youwho, I have a 1998 Dodge Ram that had a similar problem, it was working great one day then it started to cycle. I asked a few of my friends about my problem and we went out and popped the hood. We did the soapy water trick and sure enough there was a leak just in back of the fitting. I had another friend do a complete recovering of the remaining refrigerant, replaced the line and did a vaccum check of the system and refilled the system. Haven't had a problem since. Hope that helps some.....it's helps to have friends who are knowledgible of trucks. When in doubt ask.
