He is looking at getting a quad cab, 1500, 2002+, 4x4, fairly well equiped. I haven't found too many consistant problems by searching the forum. Just wondering what to watch out for and a decent price. Or possibly if someone has a good truck they want to get a new home. thanks for the input.</P>

Not to pick on ya Viper... but DUH!! LOL! Everyone should drive a car before they buy it!

I don't think there's any consisent problems.. great trucks! As for price, where are you at? I'd say, depending on mileage... $18,000+

how much difference is there between the 4.7L and the 5.9L, i've heard that the 4.7L is a little underpowered. I see no recalls on this truck but is there any parts on a used one we need to be wary of. thanks again

I myself have a 5.9L and LOVE it and agree that the 4.7 isn't as... macho as the 5.9, but I think both engines are great...

Since your looking for a 4x4, your likely not going to be turning it into a race truck, so the 4.7 should be perfectlyfine. It's not like it's sickly or anything, I just think the 5.9 is better because it's bigger... Hehehehe!

Always check the tire wear, that can tell a tale of woe... even on a spotless truck. Went and saw a NICE '98 once... perfect condition... got to the tires, the belts were slightly showing, there was excessive burnt rubber under the body... totally beaten on... and it ran great, but I don't want a truck that was beat up. LOL!!

I'd check the Oil to ensure they've changed it and also check/smell the Trans Fluid... but all in all... I've not heard anything bad about used 2002+ Ram's. I hope your friend finds what he likes!

In my humble opinion, I wouldn't pay the difference between the 4.7 and the 5.9, there was a test of 2 dakotas equipt comprably the only differance was the engine, both stock no mods, both running 3.92 gears. So what do you think would win a 4.7 sport, or a 5.9 r/t?</P>

Well in 6 runs the 4.7 won all SIX, 3 and 3 the drivers swapped trucks after 3 runs!___________________not to menchon the reason for that though is all the torc in the 5.9 it couldn't grab like the 4.7 and still get a good jump.</P>

Anyways in the 03 they were the same price for the 5.9 as the 4.7, because the 5.7 HEMI was coming out to replace it! Thats what you should get is the HEMI!</P><edited><editID>HEMI TT</editID><editDate>37951.5169675926</editDate></edited>

<P class=Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face="Times New Roman" size=3>Just touching further on the (Avoid a beater theory) As a rule I always check the tire tread depth or pattern. As aforementioned the tires tell the whole story, as do wheels. I would likely avoid any vehicle where the tires are feathered or bald or torn on the sidewall. This usually says that driver hot-rods the poop out of the vehicle, rails corners and loves Smokey burnouts, check the fender well for rubber. If the wheels have grooves, cuts or scratches, chances are the alignments shot too! Or worse the suspension is damaged. I also look at the exhaust pipe. If the pipe has excessive carbon around the edge, that driver doesn’t allow that vehicle to warm up before putting their foot into it in the morning, thus causing the condensation to poor out the pipe &amp; splatter around the edge of the pipe. My grandma has a ’93 Camry and her tailpipe is still clean on the inside, she’s probably never floored it Lol!<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Also you can look at the rotors, if they are shiny almost chrome, they are glazed from 100 mph brake stomps. Look at the gas pedal and carpet, if there is a hole or the rug is cut up from being floored, yeah guess what that thing lives at redline. If the rug has been replace and the rubber around the pedal ain’t worn, look at the Throttle body assy. If it actually has a mark on the throttle stop, it’s the same clue. Check the brake fluid (color) &amp; level as with the tranny fluid and oil. Look underneath, look for sand stuck under from “Wheelin” &amp; “Boonie Crashin” stuck branches, bushes &amp; small trees or heavy rust from corrosion etc…. you may not want a truck that has been heavily used off-road IMO……..</FONT></P>
