check engine light is on
help!! I have a dodge ram 4x4 2001. It has 58,000 miles...was coming back from trip and check engine light came on. gauges etc seem fine. gas cap was a little loose tightened then light went off...it is back on again and seems to hesitate when starting if truck is on incline...any ideas.....work 12 hours nights so havent made it to shop ...holidays and all.
if you have access to an obd-II scanner, that would be the easiest way to diagnosis the problem.most mech. charge about $90 for this service even thought the scanner only costs about $150. its ridiculous.

back to your problem though. two things that i have had to deal with in regards to the check engine light were the o2 sensor (around $80 for the front one, $120 for the back) and the speed sensor ($35, very easy to change, but i doubt thats the problem)

i think your best bet would be to run a diag. scan and get the error codes.

although its expensive, it saves you from having to spend more money on parts you dont need.

hope that helps

Try Autzone... they scan for vehicle for codes forfree... and then again, you might know someone with a scanner. But I agree it sounds like an o2 sensor... let us know!!
