Default '98 won't go out of OD

I can hit the OD Off button all I want and nothing. Been like that since I got it. Never cared much, because my lawncare trailer was small. Starting to haul car trailers with my Samurai on it now though, and its not a happy camper. Any ideas what to look for?

You got the button on the end of the shifter???
They fail!!!
replaceing the shift lever is pretty easy, I usually don't even drive them in the shop.
Take the covers off the steering column. find the wires that come out of the shift lever & unplug it.
Use an Ohm meter across the 2 wires .... I'll bet the button does not change the reading!!!
