Anyone with performance Muffler READ
Ok, Anybody who has a performance muff, but has left their resonator on needs to proceed immediately to their nearest exhaust shop or driveway and chop it off!
There has been alot of talk on here about how much the resonator actually muffles sound, whether it changes the actual tone etc. Well I have come to realize that it does both to the extreme. At first I merely swapped out my old muff for a Flowmaster 40. It sounded OK...better than stock but far from special. Yesterday I went to the shop, got rid of my whole tailpipe and ran a 2.5" tube to a 3.5" chrome tube out the side before my rear wheel...what a DIFFERENCE! The exhaust note has comletely changed, I assume this is because the resonator was cancelling out some of the exhaust "tones or frequencies" that flowmaster accentuates, to create "flowmaster sound". It finally has that great flowmaster sound and is noticeably louder. Not obnoxious, but you KNOW i'm commin.
Needless to say I'm really enjoying myself, (expect my gas bill) and figured i'd post this because it seemed that alot of people (including myself) have/had no idea how much the resonator affects the exhaust note and level.

Interesting thought that does make sense.... but I think my truck would quickly become the victim of hate crimes if I made it much louder than the 40 series that I have on there now. I go to work at 4 am... and I think the 40 series is loud enough most of the time to make a few neighbors wonder what that rumble is.... but anyway... glad to hear ya enjoy it!
OK.....Now I am really thinkin.....maybe i am confused on what we are talkin about... what resonator are we talkin about? Where is it in the stock set up and what does it look like? The guy that did my work didnt say anything about removing it...but maybe he did. All I know is I get a nice deep rumble that I love....nothing TOO out of control. Now you've got me curious what is under there and what isnt.
The resonator came on 04+'s to help them meet noise control standards. It's just another smallish muffler right on the tailpipe before it angles out away from the truck. Yours is too early for them to have added a resonator.
I removed my resonator and really didn't tell a difference. I'm running the stock muffler though.

Lol we've had this convo on here before, its nothin to worry about. But no I dont, I used 2.5" pipe so it isn't a super low backpressure system. That popping noise and other similar ones are characteristic of low backpressure systems, especially flowmasters. Wish I had it though, I think it sounds cool.
