Default 4WD question

Hi all, I have a question that I couldnt seem to find the answer to in looking through the forum threads.. I have a 2000 Ram 1500, 4x4. Im having problems with my 4wd. When Its engaged, it will lock in, then if I drive it will slam out of 4wd, then slam back in -really hard, it shakes the whole truck bad. Its like its slippin in and out. Ive taken the axle and the front diff apart, none of the gears look worn badly.. all LOOKS ok.. Any ideas why this is happening.. I cant figure it out... Vacuum leak?? Any help would be great.. Thanks!

sounds like the chain in the transfer has busted some teeth, or the gears have lost some teeth causeing it to do this. Or it could be the chain has stretched causeing it to slip the teeth.

driveing in 4wd on dry roads is not a good idea, there is a slight difference in the wheel speed from front to rear and this puts a load on the chain in the transfer that is not designed to take that type of a load and will stretch it out over time.

Can you explain this one...If your gears are the same front and rear, then they should spin at the same rate.

Did you check the fluid level in the transfer case? My old jeep used to leak and do that.

I used to have a durago that would do the same thing and what you should try is find some dirt, mud, snow, something like that and put it in to 4wd and keep pressure on the transfer case shifter handle and start driving and once you start moving then you can remove your hand and you should be good. It helped when i did that in my durago and it was a 2000 with the 5.9L.
