Hemi Tick - Oil
I took my truck with 69,000 miles on it to the dealer for excessive oil consumption and the "Hemi Tick". They replaced a faulty PCV unit. They acknowledge the tick, but say it is normal and Chrysler specifically notes that the hydraulic lifter will make that sound and is not a reason for repair. Dealer also said Chrysler allows 3 quarts of oil use every 3,000 miles, which they consider an oil change interval.
The Service Advisor told me to listen to the engine and see if it gets worse, or the oil consumption does not improve. I burned5 quarts of oil in 4,500 miles. I run AMSOIL Series 2000 synthetic and I am changing the oil this week. I have run synthetic for the last 45,000 miles, with only 15,000 miles on this oil and filter as of today.

I believe you have a problem. I also use Amsoil synthetic on my 2004 Hemi. I only have 48,000 miles on the vehicle, but no oil consumption between changes. My truck is used as a work truck pulling heavy trailers daily....no racing just good hard work....
I think the SM is full of crap. I think I would call them on this one and have your Service Manager and or General Manager show you in writing or in some official Dodge book that said consumption of 3 Qts of oil in 3,000 miles is Ok in a Hemi engine. Maybe a qt in 3k miles is ok to Dodge in a Hemi but not 3.
My self I cannot see Dodge saying 3 qt in 3k is expectable in any engine. Go back and give then hell and show you proof and if they can not then keep at them or find a new dealer to work on you truck.
One last thought is that you are close to having your warranty expires so he wants you to wait so that they can charge you full price to fix it after you no longer have a warranty.
Good Luck

for years the rule of thumb has been 1/2 -1 qt every 1000 miles. this depends on how it was taken care of and driven. hold engine a 5000 rpm all the time it will be worse than than the guy who goes too work and home. 5 qt is a lot but at how many miles between changes. at the most w/ synthetic and a 7 qt pan i would change every 6 k.oil breaks down over time, weather it is man made or not. change your oil and check it every 1000 milesand see what happens and make a log for your dealer.when an engine is new it is bad, then gets better, then gets worse with age. it like dipper changing a baby, then you grow out of it, 80-90 years later back in dippers. as far as the hemi tick. they have been like that since 03. i have had complaning custs, walked them out to another one of our techs trucks with low miles. he listened to his and was happy with what he had.
