miles per gallon....
hey guys this is my first post here and hopefully you can help. i recently bought a used 2000 dodge ram 1500 with a 5.9 liter v8 that has 2 wheel drive and it appears to be stock lifted. anyway the main reason i bought it, besides the fact it had what i wanted is the dealer said it got 20-25 miles to the gallon. thinking back after the fact i should have questioned it further but accompanied by him saying "I've been selling these for 8 years so im sure it gets this" made me not think twice. anyway i get home and look online (gotta love the internet) and the only site i managed to find said it would get 12-18 miles per gallon, i called back and asked why the seller blatantly lied to me and i have a meeting set up in a few days for something with the manager of the store and the guy that sold me the truck. but i was wondering what you guys get mileage wise per gallon, since id rather not just have one site for proof i figured if the site was wrong you guys would know. or if it was right you could tell me. hell if you know a upgrade/mod that can get me some extra miles per gallon i'd love that info to. also just for fun what would you guys do, i paid blue book for it so the dealer made no money basically, i love the truck but the mileage is most likely going to kill me if that's what it gets i live in a kind of area that is just now getting developed so its a ways down to anything close, plus living in California (gas was down to 1.99 today yay) makes me wonder if it would be worth it, would you guys keep it and just to hell with the miles per gallon, or was the one site i found wrong. id LOVE if someone who has the same thing i have could tell me if im just paranoid or if it really gets that low per gallon, anyway thanks for any help you guys can give me

I've got a '97 Ram 2500 4x4 longbox regular cab with the HD 5.9L. Stock I averaged about 15-17 mpg depending on how I drove it. With a loaded car trailer I averaged about 12-13 with cruise set at about 63 mph. I bumped up to 285 tires (about 33") and lost some mileage. With the conversion from the auto trans to the 5-speed I'm currently doing, combined with 4.10 gears I'm installing, I'm expecting about 18-20 mpg, but time will tell. Good luck.
congrats on your new truck. I dont think that any Ram could get 20-25 mpg avg. Lets Face it, We dont really buy a fullsize truck for the mileage. I have the 4.7L and when I installed the CAI and TBS I did up my mileage and can get 20mpg at times on the highway if the moons are alligned just right but it doesnt happen very often. I average 18 highway 15 city. but that is with a 4.7L Standard Cab. I would tell the Manager that the salesman straight up lied to you to get you in the truck and if that is the kind of sales practice he supports you will call the better business buerue ( not sure how to spell that )and go to the online forums and pass that info along. I am not sure what they will tell you but you could also talk to the regional manager and tell that person also what had happened. Maybe you will get some free floormats out of the deal, but they need to know that it is not right to take advantage of people in that way. I would Keep your truck though I am sure that you will love it like the rest of us do. I can only speak for myself when I say that I have just accepted that it gets the mileage that it does and enjoy the truck for its many good properties.
i think the people hate me, i went in today and yelled up and down so they ended up selling me a extended warrenty for half price, and even before they threw in the car alarm for free, something they normally charge 500 bucks for, plus i got the car at blue book so they made nothing on the car and might have lost a little bit of money. i like the tuck though and have been looking at mods lately, if i can get the mileage up like 1 or 2 miles per gallon i would be thrilled but the first thing i have to buy is subs then find a good mechanic to mod my truck for me. i moved recently so i know no one up here so that shall be a fun adventure
you probably didn't cheat them too much on the price of the truck. Dealers rarely, and i stress rarely purchase vehicles for anything over NADA value, which beleive me, is far lower than Blue Book. Banks and dealerships tout Blue Book prices, but insurance companies and dealership buyers will only pay NADA.

I have a friend that is a sales manager at another unmentionable dealership and she says that what tommygunz says is absolutely correct. The dealership is not loosing any amount of money on that truck. if they were they would have tried to lock you into another vehicle. the warranty that they sold you for half price was no loss to them since the warranty is covered by Dodge not by the dealership. They really don't get much from a warranty except for an atta boy from the district office. At least from the other unmentionable place that is how they work it. but hey at least you got something out of it. again good luck with the truck and hope that you like it. as far as mpg the throttle body spacer and Air intake helped my truck. on my wifes Durango she installed a Tornado air insert and a K&N stock replacement air filter. She experienced the same gains on her 4.7L Durango as I did on my Ram and spent 1/3 as much as I did. I am going to try the Tornado on mine and see what I get along with the other mods.
