Default K&N + plugs = lower gas mileage

I just did the 30K service on my 2001 ram pickup. Replaced the dirty filter with a K&N and replaced the plugs with Bosch platinum. I noticed my gas mileage has dropped between 1/2 to 1 MPG. Any ideas why it would have dropped?

You went from a dirty stock air filter to a high flow K&N.. you probably increased air flow by 10% at least... and more air means the ECM has to add more fuel. Hence you have worse gas milage. But that also translates into a bit more performance.. does it seem a bit more "awake?"

I also heard the bosch 4's don't work well in the Magnum motors... not sure why. Autolite 3923's or NGK ZFR5F-11 are good plugs. Was the K&N a drop in?

The K&N was a drop in. Seems a little more awake. During the summer I do a lot of towing the boat to and from the lake. Boat and trailer weighs about 4000LBS. There are alot of hills and I only get 5.8 MPG. It was 6.6 before the change. Would different plugs help with the gas mileage? The old plugs were roasted at 30K.

The +4's are desighned for the Mazda Rotory engine. They will work in a Hemi, but for standard head engines they SUCK

Alright ladies and gentlemen....

I went to Autolite and NGK's respective websites..... striking resemblance in the two ... anyways..

Autolite had three makes of Sparkplugs that matched up with my '02 5.9 mag... im not sure what you guys were looking for but what i found was
-Autolite- Double Platinum item # APP5224
Single Platinum item # AP5224

-NGK- Iridium - item # ZFR6IX-11
- Double Platinum- item # PZFR6F-11

These are the top two ranked sparkplugs for the 5.9 mag on an '02 ram according to the websites

so my question to you is this

Which company makes a better plug, NGK looks to be more exspensive, but that is not always a true testement of their quality....

Thanks again

Dano

you must had no clue what are you talking about. Rotary never use +4. , if you do most likey you will damage your engine.
