I am trying to troubleshoot a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 v10. The truck was idling then stopped by itself. I have checked for spark and is okay. There is plenty of fuel in the tank. I have a feeling it is the fuel pump. I tried turning on the ignition and listening for the pump by putting my ear on the tank. No noise. Also I notice a valve (looks like a tire valve)on the injector tree. I would assume that there is suppose to befuel pressure behind it and no pressure.

Any help from you guru's will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Does it run when you give it some gas......but shut down when you let off the pedal..........If so.....Check your battery, no idea it happens but for some reason my durango had the same issue and it was the battery I've heard others with 1500 and 2500 that have had the same problem.

Your right, it's the fuel pump. It could also be the fuse or relay for the fuel pump, check these first because there cheaper and easier to replace. The valve your refering to is called a shrader valve and it's used to check fuel pressure and to relieve the pressure when replacing/repairing the injectors, fuel rail, fuel pump or fuel line. It's also useful when adding nitrous.

I found the relay and replaced it. It is not it. I couldn't find the fuel pump fuse. Does anyone knowwhere it is if it even exists at all? How else canI check to make sure it is the fuel pump.

I have another hunch since replacing the fuel pump is a big ordeal. Anyone have trouble with water in the tank in temps near -5? I wonder? hmmmmmmm...

I need to buy a manual. In the mean time please help us.

If there is no pressure at the valve then the fuel pump is not functioning. If there is water in the fuel line that would stop the fuel flow, but when you turn the key on you should still hear the fuel pump hum/buzz for a few seconds as it builds up the fuel pressure. If you can, have someone else turn the key to the "ON" position as you listen at the tank because it will only make noise for a few seconds after the key is in the "ON" position then it will stop because it has enough pressure.

Hey,

I got the same problem. My 99 1500 was idling when I went into the store but when i came out it was dead with the key on.

Tried starting it. Would turn over fine but would not catch. Will try a new battery. I left the door open about a month ago and killed the battery. When I tried jump starting it, it would not stay running unless I gave it gas. I had to idle it at 1500 rpms to keep it running.

I am guessing it is the battery.

I have a similar truck to yours, and have not had that problem. However, some of my friends at the dealer asked had that happened to me. Check your battery, and of course, try checking/replacing your fuses /relays first. It is much more worth your time! You may or may not be able to find a book on our trucks. I've had a very hard time, they may be old enough now . Good Luck!

Hey,

Fuel Pump was shot. Common problem. Don't waist your time. Got some other reading for you also.

I guess Dodge doesn't want to acknowledge that they have a serious problem with their fuel pumps. Guy that fixed my truck said he did 3 others last month.
