Default Engine cutting out... Please Help !!!

As i drive my '91 RT the engine intermittenly cuts out...
It starts right back up...
Theres a ticking in the voltage gauge and it drops as the engine cuts out.
That is the only thing i have noticed different ...
It hasn't happened on the freeway only in traffic so far...
Thanks you guys for all the help...
Dave

My first thought would be the ECU. The ticking you are hearing is probably coming from the relay (MFI I think) under the carpet piece on the passenger side of the console. Do a google search for ECMTOGO.com, they offer very good service at a good price. Sometimes you can find a rebuilt ECU through a chain auto parts store.

Did the alternator check out OK?

Battery terminals clean?

You have to remove the ECU to do a visual inspection of the capacitors.

When my RT had the same symptoms you are describing, it threw no codes...

ECMTOGO.com, they offer very good service at a good price. Sometimes you can find a rebuilt ECU through a chain auto parts store....like Oreillys, Autozone, CarQuest...

Do you know how to remove the ECU?

I found one for my TT at Oreilleys Auto for $250, but that was after the $100 core charge.

Removing the ECU is pretty easy actually. There is one screw in the console side carpets, one press in connector near the firewall and a couple hooks near the seats. Take out the screw and the press in connector, and wiggle the carpet pieces back towards the seats, the should pop free with minimal fuss. There are 2 10mm bolts on the driver side, one on the passenger side. Take them out and work the ECU out the driver side. Unhook the wiring harness' (2) and it will be out. Unhook your battery first, of course.
