it is possible that the water pump is going out or bad thermostat. Also check if your fans turn on when the motor is starting to get hot.

it could be the temp sensor located at the bottom of the radiator. it controls the cooling fans, my sons failed, the car overheated

1) See if the big fan runs when it start to go hot. Make sure its not intermittent. That means a bad connection by the 4 pin connector from the Fan and to the Fuse box. Also check the fuse.
2) Check the relays. Plug and unplug, make sure you don't brake them.
3) Touch the top radiator hose, if its cool the thermostat is stuck in close position. The bottom hose will be very very hot.
4) If your temperature gage works then your sensor is fine.

I had all these problems. Never had the water pump problem.
