Reverse is busted???
hey i just bought a 92 stealth es with 60,000 miles. its a mtx but theres something up with my reverse. everytime i try to back up i have to baby it along or it pops outta gear. idk it seems like its in there all the way but as soon as the clutch comes out and i start to back up itll pop into neutral. any suggestions becuase i really like this car and i just bought it.!!!!???
4th and 5th gear are pretty close to the same ratio, but they are different.
On DSM's and FWD Stealth's (the trannys are nearly the same) there is a bolt that holds the gearset (don't know the technical term) that will loosen up and cause the tranny to pop out of gear. This usually happens to 5th gear, since 5th and reverse are near eachother, reverse is sometimes affected. Remove your RF tire, the inner fender, this will unhide an access a cover on the tranny that exposes the bolt that needs tightened. You would have to do some searching around some DSM sites to find the whole process. From what I have read, it is not very difficult to remedy.
With that being said, it could still be the shift fork. Driving around with your hand on the shifter stresses the fork and causes it to not hold the gears properly.

Not really sure how much it would cost. You would have to remove the tranny to replace the fork though.
Here is a link to a write up on how to retorque the bolts. It would be a little different since you have a Stealth and the write up is for a DSM, but the trannys are the same (internal wise) onlt the case is different.
