Default crunching sound

ok i just bought a 1991 es , it starts fine when you depress the gas, it waits and then slowly gets up and goin and then finally goes good.....after that, when you get up to about 45 mph it slips out of gear and redlines, so it wont drive over 45 an hr. and it makes crunching sounds in the engine......any ideas?

I'm assuming you have an automatic tranny..?? It sounds like it could be going bad. Turn the overdrive off, drive the car and see how it shifts. It could be the end clutch assembly on the tranny. The endclutch provide the OD and usually is the first thing to go bad. You (or a shop) can replace the end clutches without pulling the tranny.
