Default New to Site, 92 ES tranny problem

hey new to the site and new to the stealth car.
Im not a professional mechanic but i can do some work.
I just recently purchased a very very clean 92 stealth es. Love the car and the look just one problem. The transmission seems to be stuck in 3rd gear, a common problem ive seen on here but i havnt seen what exactly the problem is... ANY HELP!? ive hurd either a sensor maybe, a vacum tube, or somethiing about some kind of key or something(dont know about that one haha)... so will this mean i need a new transmissino built? i love the car and want to make a nice street car that can beat some of those vtechs. so any opinions on some mods such as cold air intake, flywheel, etc? any free mods you know about? and please help me with this tranny problem!!!!!!!!!!thanks and im liking this site more and more each time i visit...

It sounds like it could be in "limp" mode (auto tranny I am assuming). I cannot recall the cause nor cure for this at the moment, I'll have to do some checking around, but that is what it sounds like. Try resetting the ECU; unplug the (-)neg battery terminal for 10 minutes, see if that does not reset it... Worth a shot anyway...

Edit: Upon checking around...it does sound like it is in "limp mode." Possible causes can be a bad connection on a harness, or the TCU is crapping out. The control boards on these cars have subpar capacitors that tend too leak after several years, the stuff that leaks from them is caustic and can eat up the PCB.

btw: nice SN

I was having the same problem and it turned out to be the TPS adjustment. I know I thought what the hell do they have in common but its one of the checks in the 3rd gear lock.

Well i decided i would take it to a dealership (mitsubishi) and have them look at it and well i pretty much wasted $15 in gas.... two hour round trip two hour wait for them to tell me they dont know what the problem is and they would have to tear into the transmission to fix the problem.... haha worst thing ive ever had to go through... $55 for nothing... so i was just checking around on ebay and found some used rebuilt transmissions for about $250-$600 price range and im just goin to some local transmission shops and get a quote... any suggestions?

Last question........ whats the SRS light mean on my dash? its been lit up since ive boughten the car and i dont know what it means... could it have something to do with my transmission? and any help on where i could find my tps adjustment and Tcu???

The SRS is the "Safety Restraint System" (airbag). I don't know much about it.
