Default Transmission questions

Ok i have a few questions ill try and squeeze them all in here and hopefully they will make sense.

1. My stealth will grind when putting it in 1st gear if i try to go to fast into gear. Am i correct in thinking this is the first sign of the synchros going bad?? The clutch is all the way in and i just adjusted the freeplay to make sure it wasnt the clutch. The clutch still pulls great and doesnt slip even a little bit.

2. If it is the synchros about how much would a trans rebuild cost (estimated not exact) and a clutch replacement as well while it is open.

3. Would it be cheaper to swap the trans if i find one for sale on say ebay or some place and at what point does the cost benefit go out the window. In other words what would the max amount be on a used 5speed trans to come out ahead of having someone take it out etc. Would it be wise to take said trans to a shop by itself and have them rebuild it then i could possibly put it in myself??

4. If i go that route of putting it in myself how tough is it and are there any "gotchas"??

Thats about it i think. I looked around and didnt see anything that jumped out at me.
