Default transmission died?

I have a 1995 Dodge Stealth, non turbo, sohc, 170 thousand miles. A month ago I was driving and all of a sudden it was like the car went into neutral. All I got was revs. I turned onto a side street(coasted), shut the car off and then turned it back on. Still no gears, not even reverse. I shut it off and checked the trans fluid. It was full. I started the car up again still no gears. Shut it off and then turned it back on and it drove off. I drove it twice after that and it revved up real high before shifting once but then I brought it into the shop. They said they'd try a trans fluid/filter change and if that didn't work it would probably be a lot of money. Well, I picked the car up and drove it home and it lost the transmission again. After sitting on the side of the road for about 20 minutes the tranmission kicked in again and I drove home. I have it in the drive way now. It really jerks when going in reverse or forward(when just testing it in the driveway). I haven't driven it for a week or two. Does anyone know what's wrong. It seems worse now that they changed the fluid and filter. But I guess maybe it was worth a try. Seems weird it works forever and then one day it decides to act up. Should I sell it as is? Or do you get more money for these things parted out?

Default RE: transmission died?

There are so many variables in an auto tranny, it is hard to diagnose over the web. It could be the tranny control unit (TCU), it could be something catastrophic inside the guts of the tranny itself. What is odd is how it doesn't do it all the time, which leads me to believe it could be something in the control unit, but again, it's hard too tell.

The only problem with parting it out, is once you sell everything of value, you still have to get rid of the 'carcass,' but you would make more money than selling it with a bad tranny.
