Default 96 dodge stratus bent valves ?

Whats up Everyone
I am new to the forums and i have a problem. my dad came and got me the other night and said we had to to go get the stratus, I said " Why?" he said "it quit running". so we went and towed it back to the house with a chain and his truck. well i got it back to the house and checked it out. the timing belt cover is busted from the last one so i was looking at the belt and it had a grove down the middle of it. well i got to looking and the serpentine belt shreaded and knocked the power steering belt off which wrapped around the crack pulley and ate up the cover . well i pulled all of that stuff off to get to the timing belt. well it had part of the cover on the crank gear all nice and melted. so i am figuring that it jumped time. we got a new timing belt. reset the timing and nothing. i did a compression check on all 4 cylinders and nothing. now it just backfires so bad through the intake it blew the damn cover off of the air filter. so do i have bent vavles or something else? i know this is a long post but i just wanted to try and include all of the details i could

thanks kaust

What size engine do you have? If you have the 2.0 L then i believe that particularengine is an interference engine. Which means that when the timing beltbusted itdid bend thevalves in the engine. Hopefullythat isnt the case but at any rate good luck.

I think it sounds like the valves are bent. I know that horrible backfiring because when I did my timming belt it was just a tiny little bit off time so it backfired like crazy, had to redo the whole belt. It sounds like your timming was off so bad it bent the valves. What do you mean when you say "the timing belt cover is busted from the last one". I would imagine you replaced the belt allready once a 200k + plus engine, is that what you meant.

the reason why i replaced the timeing belt the first time is because the belt split right down the middle. and because of it spiltting it had a flap i guess you could say and busted the cover.
well i am going to try and replace the head luckily i have another motor for parts.
thanks for your input guys i will let you know whats going on maybe some pics too.

Ok i finally got a chance to pull the valve cover off and check the rockers. all of the intake rockers have alot of play in them like 1/4" to 1/2" in some cases. from what i can tell all the exhaust rockers have no play in them at all. and from every motor valve train i have worked on has had like .030 and stuff like that. or are they supposed to be like that? so i take it that the valves are bent. correct me if i am wrong
