strange clunk when taking off

I have noticed recently that when I am stopped then take off (as like at a stop sign), I hear and feel a clunking sound toward the front end driver's side that almost seems like something is shifting when the car goes forward. For example, at a stop light, I take off slowly and after a few feet I feel it even if the radio is on. When I'm on the road, it is fine - no problems. I'm trying to rule out things little by little like brake pads not releasing but I don't think it's that. Could it be ball joints? Are those a pain to replace? Thanks!
