2002 stratos auto transmision
I have a problem with my transmision. The car sat for a few years it has 60K miles. When I started driving it again the trans started out fine after about 1 day it started whinning and was like you put it in nuteral. After it sat for a day it was fine again for a few miles and do it again like starving for fluid. I changed fluid and filter and was ok for a few days then same thing. I have heard that maybe torque converter clutches were gone. Any help with this would be appreciated Thanks
Just making sure, sometimes people make mistakes or are not as competent as others.
Jack the front of your car up so that both wheels are off the ground with sufficient clearance to turn the wheels with power from the engine.
Use jack stands, along with your jacks to be safe.
Have somebody (wife, friend, homosexual lover) sit in the car and with the emergency brake engaged put the transmission into "drive" and slowly drive the wheels to simulate regular driving.
Being sure that the vehicle is stable on the jack stands, without getting too close to the spinning wheels or cv shafts, try to find the source of the "whining" sound you described.
When you know the area of the sound, post back on here and we'll try to help you further.
Love always,
ryan.

engine type? every bit of onfo helps.
the car sitting, IMHO, should not effect the clutch plates. you might have issues with gaskets dryrotting/leaking do to the time the internals were not exposed/kept wet with ATF.
i rember something about the 1st gen neon tranny (ATX) having ajustable bands that effect slippage. not sure as my haynes just says take it to a pro.
i do know that the '02 ATX has a seperate computer. ask your local parts store if they can pull codes from it, might have to go to the dealer (call first and talk to the service manager to get his 2 cents).
hope this helps.
