2000 Stratus wheel problem
Recently bought 2 tires mounted on dodge/chrysler rims for my Stratus. Mounted the wheels on my car last night with no problems except when tightening the lugs it seemed as if I had to tighten down more than on the wheels I just took off and low and behold when I was done I could not move the car at all. Took the new wheels off and put the old ones back on and everything was fine. Any suggestions here?
i woudl bet that you dont have enough backspacing clearance for the brake calipers. when you tightened the wheels down, it forced the outside of the caliper down against the pad, basically locking the front brakes. if you want to check, find some chalk and rub chalk all over the front edge and corners of your calipers, then put the wheels on, and tighten them by hand...then take the wheel back off...there shouldnt be ANY contact between the rim and caliper.
+1 there... Had the same issue when I blew out both my front tires in the same day. one spare, ya know the deal. Took the spare from my cavalier (same lug pattern) except the hubs are flat on the 1g stratus, so the calipers woulden't even let the cav spare sit. Tried the full size cav (16") tire, and the same deal. Wound up taking a wheel from a nearby grand caravan... it rubbed, but I was able to limp it to the nearest tire shop. BTW. I did ask the caravan owner first
Yep. the 1g strat (maybe the 2g also) have flat hubs, and require rims with larger offsets. The offsets on my wheels are nearly 1 inch deep. the caravan rim i borrowed was about 3/4 inch, and the cav rims had no offset (is built into the hubs). Spacers will give you that offset
spacers are illegal in some states, because they can cause the wheels to stress the lugnuts and cause them to break...i think that you should put the new tires on the right rims.
