Serpentine Belt Replacement! HELP!!
Whats up guys.. i have a 97 dodge stratus, and my serpentine belt needs to be replaced (it shredded off) and im having some problems. are there any other tensioners besides the alternator? i have a couple inches of slack on this belt and i cant figure out how to get the tension right. any suggestions? thanks!
there should be a tensioner. look for a pulley with nothing connected to it and then look at the bracket. If not sometimes they use the alternator or ac to tension. If it slipped right on and you didn't loosen anything, you might have the wrong belt.
I just replaced the serpentine belt in my daughter's '96 stratus 2.4 liter with A/C. Valvoline tried for one hour and ended up giving up and putting back the old belt. It took me 15 minutes. Assuming you have a 2.4 liter four cylinder, there is only the alternator for a tensioner. There is a tension pully but it doesn't have any adjustment or spring tension. Remove the alternator guard by taking out two bolts. Loosen the pivot nut on the front of the alternator and loosen the adjusting bolt on the side of the alternator until the alternator is all the way back towards the engine. Slip the new belt on the alternator pulley, A/C pulley (if you have A/C) and craqnk pully, pay attention to the belt routing as indicated on the sticker on the hood! Slip on the idler pulley last and it will go right on. If your belt is too loose chances are you aren't following the correct belt routing. If you can't get the belt on you are not putting the idler on last. That should do it!
