I recently bout a 2005 dodge stratus sxt and the previous owner had broke the remote for keyless entry. I was wondering if I was to buy a remote would I be able to program it my self or would I need to take it to a dealer.

And just to clarify before I buy is this the original key that the car should come with?

My understanding of the 2g is that if you have one active remote, you can program another yourself. Without an active one, you will need to involve a dealer of a locksmith that has the proper programming equipment.
