Default Is it ok to switch from regular oil to synthetic?

Hello,

I bought my stratus with 170K on it and I have no idea what oil has been in it. So when I did my first oil change I made sure to just use regular Pennzoil High Mileage formula. I have always liked synthetic, have always used it but I wasn't sure what effect it may have on the engine. Is it alrigt to swap?

You're right up there with me as far as mileage. It would be great to know what year, engine and trim level you have (01+ let us know if it's coupe or sedan - Very important)

Some say to go through a couple changes with a synthetic blend (I used Valvoline high mileage synthetic blend). I use Mobile1 "full synthetic for high mileage" in both my '00 Stratus v6 and '03 Town & Country LTD/AWD.

A note of caution: some reports are that synthetic will leak in places that regular oil didn't. Simple solution is to go a slightly higher weight oil. I personally haven't had any issues during my switchover, and nothing "unusual" afterwards. If you're looking to squeak a little extra mpg, a lighter oil may help, but may increase oil leakage.
