Default 98 Stratus fans don't come on

On my 98 stratus the fans do not come on unless the AC is turned on, we have replaced both heater hoses (one had burst) and the coolant temp sensor. we have temped the coolant with the car running and it is hitting 220+ farenheit and they still do not come on (at that temp we turned the car off to avoid anything catastrophic happening) as soon as the ac is kicked on the fans start up... according to the manual there is only one relay so if they work at all that should indicate that the relay is fine right?

Running out of things to check and I am getting sorely tempted to just put in a manual switch... lol

Please Help!!

ok... i found a couple of sources that indicate there may be 2 relays for the fan... I have been trying to find digrams of the relays with no luck... does anyone know where to find them...

I am getting more and more confused as I go...

you get yourself a factory service manual, or you go to your local Dodge dealer and using quality people skills you get a print off of the wiring diagrams, or you go to you local public library and see if you can access one of the many quality online repair manuals such as Mitchell on demand, snap-on shop key, etc. or you can spend a couple bucks and have access to AllData for just your car. it's pretty cheap and then you'll basically have all the shop manual information right at your disposal.

This is an example of how to problem solve. I have given you the directions on how to fish, it's now up to you to finish the learning process so you can eat.

OK... both relays have been replaced and the problem continues..... <-seems to quite accurately depict how I am feeling right this moment....

Any other thoughts on what his could be? We have not at this time considered the fan itself as it does come on. Just not when it is supposed to. Should we be considering it?

Also, all of the information I am finding indicates that the fans should kick on between 195 and 215 farenheit, is that correct?

I am really not very mechanically inclined and am currently unemployed so I am on a very tight budget with this. Any help you guys can give is greatly appreciated. Thank you

my thoughts are you get yourself to the library and see if you can get wiring diagrams so you can diagnose power, control circuits.

if it was me, I'd find someone with a scanner and see if the scanner can activate the fans.

btw on my stratus, the fan doesn't come on until engine temp reaches 212.

Thank you for helpimg me sap... I really do appreciate it... and thank you o ranswering about the temp, we were definitely past 212... lol

the continuing saga.... on te usggestion of the dodge dealership we disconnected the battery to see if it would reset the brain (not entirely sure how this works, again naot exactly a mechanic lol) reconnected it. the next ide having been to disconnect the sensor briefly with the car running as that should force the fans on (again please bear with me I am regurgitating instructions) As i turned the car on I heard my father (who is "helping me" with the car (please read doing the work unless another pair of hands are needed) cursing so I turn the car off. It turns out the fans came on.... Now the battery is dead... very headdesk moment..... charging the battery now....

Cross your fingers for me..

uber blonde question: What is a scanner?

oh and sap... we did find the wiring diagrams... thanks for the leads on that also.
