Default Friend's bad MPG's

My friend has a 2005 dodge stratus sxt 2.7 gas. He said lately he's been getting 11-12 mpg. He said he's changed air filter, oil, gas, spark plugs and is going to try and reset the computer tomorrow. He said the check engine light isn't on but is going to check for any stored codes.....anyone have any idea why the MPG's might be so low?

THanks

Had the same problem with my 06. Had no clue til it threw a CEL for catalyst efficiency. Front convertor was about 80% plugged.

Thanks, I will have him check that out. He took apart the dash to see if his check engine light was burnt out and he found out that it wasn't even plugged in from another time he took it to the dealership....go figure

That's how mine ended up with custom headers. Dealership wanted like $800 for the cats, plus $450 to install them. Got my headers built and installed for $600. CEL is always on but at least i know why.

How would he go about checking to see if that is clogged?

I deal with a private shop by me. The dealerships are way overpriced and do relatively shady work.

My guy used a bore scope in the front o2 sensor hole. He was able to show me the catalyst material. It looked like a layer of gum over the top of it.

can it be cleaned out and reused if it is clogged or would he have to go new?

Unfortunately new. Or he could shell it if he doesn't have to worry about emissions. They just have catalyst canisters inside that pretty much just fall out when tipped over.

Is there more than one cat on this car? Also, will it throw a code if hollowed out?
