Default 2000 Dodge Status Wont start 2.4 engine

my 2000 dodge startus shut off at a red light and wont start back up. one mechanic said it was the timing belt and that i needed a new engine.. another mechanic says if it was the timing belt the car wont have backfired up the engine like it did. he suggest its the cam position sensor or the catalytic converter. what do you think?

I think it's broke and you need a new car?

Did you do a compression test? That'll answer mechanic A's statement.

These remind of test question Tech A say and Tech B say. Which one is correct A,B,C or D.

I just recently got a timing belt replaced on my 03 Strat(thank god its a non interference) anyways i was driving around 60 and all of a sudden my RPMs went all wacky around 600-1000 and fluctuated around there until the car coasted to a stop. Had it towed and turned out my timing belt snapped. Garage then took a boring scope to make sure the pistons didn't hit the cylinders and like i said earlier, it was a non interference engine so it didn't.

Im not sure if this helps but thats what happened to me. usually the belts go at like 80,000-100,000 miles.
