Default Blows only out defrost

Hi all,
I've tried searching the forum with no luck but cannot believe I have the only car that does this. My air will only blow out the defrost, cannot switch to vent or floor. I was wondering if the air door motor is electric, vacuum or cable operated. I was going to tear into it today, but we just got another inch of snow, so I am sitting in here where it is warm trying to find a bit of info. Also I suspect the blend door is the problem area, so info or pics on where it is would be helpful. I can find it if I was to look, but like I said, we got some darn snow so I don't want to be tearing lower dash apart looking if someone can help me out.

RECIRCULATION DOOR CABLE
The RECIRC door is actuated by a cable which mechanically positions the door.

The RECIRC door actuator is located at the far right of the A/C Heater housing near the right A-pillar Recirculation Cable Location

REMOVAL
1.Place the ignition key in the OFF position before removing control module.
2.Remove trim bezel Trim Bezel
3.Remove cluster hood bezel retaining screws in the trim bezel opening Control Module Screws
4.Pry up the cluster hood bezel a few inches to expose the cubby bin/cigar lighter bezel screws.
5.Remove the cubby bin/cigar lighter bezel and wiring.
6.Remove the control module retaining screws.
7.Drop the A/C control module into the cigar lighter/cubby bin bezel opening Control Module At Bezel Opening Then disconnect the wiring on the rear of the control module.
8.Release the recirculation cable retaining clip from the top of the control module. Retain the clip for future use. Then disconnect the recirculation control cable.
9.Remove right under panel silencer/duct.
10.Disconnect cable flag at right of recirculation housing Disconnect Recirculation Cable
11.Remove cable core end from recirculation actuator lever.
INSTALLATION
For installation, reverse the above procedures. Verify that the cables are properly adjusted, free of interference, and the module is seated properly.

CABLE ADJUSTMENT
The cables must be adjusted for proper function of the control module. To adjust the cable, attach the cable to the lever arm of the control module. Turn the **** fully counterclockwise. Pull the cable jacket away from the cable end until taut. Clip the cable jacket to the control module. The **** should travel a full 180° if the cable is properly adjusted.

Thanks but not sure if that can be it. Here's why. The battery died Sunday on me so I took it out to get one yesterday, well got the new one in, Great location by the way, started the car and while setting the clock and radio air was coming out the vents, I switched the control a few times and all is good. Now I wonder WHY??? This morning I turned it to heat and still working, now they are talking a bunch of snow tomorrow so I will see if it sticks if I turn on the defroster for the drive in.

my 96 did the same thing... The control for that is electronic not cable or vac, when you remove the heater cluster you check resistance across the different terminals as you turn the selector you should get a different ohm reading depending what position the switch is in... if you don't get different ohm readings then your heater controls are toast... that being said I removed mine, tested it, and it failed but I didnt have a new one to put in so i reinstalled the old one until I had a chance to go pick one. When I started the car it worked again! I'm guessing when your battery died, it "reset" itself. I'll post up the ohm readings later tonight... i dont have my book with me today

It did seem like something must have reset, still working today, so from your reply it is a elec. motor on the blend door so I wont be looking for vacuum leak like on the old cars, they would go to defrost if no, or low vacuum.
Thanks again .
